Set up your ChatGPT ads account

How to open your own OpenAI Ads account, invite AITWIRE to it, connect it to AITWIRE and set a monthly ceiling, so campaigns can be prepared for you to approve.

Before you start

ChatGPT ads run from an OpenAI Ads account that your business owns. OpenAI bills your business directly for its ads, and every campaign, with its budget, needs your approval before AITWIRE creates it.

Step 1: Open an OpenAI Ads account

Go to ads.openai.com and create an account in your business's own legal name. Businesses in Canada and Australia can open one themselves.

The account, its ads and its bills belong to your business, not to AITWIRE.

Step 2: Finish your brand setup

Complete the brand setup in Ads Manager, including your brand's icon. OpenAI reviews your brand before any of your ads can run, so do this step early.

Step 3: Add a payment method

Add a payment method in Ads Manager. OpenAI bills your business directly for your ads. AITWIRE never pays for your ads and never holds your ad spend.

Step 4: Invite AITWIRE

In Ads Manager, invite ads@aitwire.com to your ad account as a member. This is AITWIRE's login for the ad accounts of the businesses it works with, so you do not need to invite anyone else from AITWIRE.

Step 5: Connect your account to AITWIRE

AITWIRE connects to your ad account with an API key. AITWIRE uses this key to read your ad account's results, and to create, start, pause, change and stop only the campaigns you approve.

There are two ways to set it up:

  • AITWIRE's team creates the key for you. After you invite ads@aitwire.com, tell AITWIRE's team that it may go ahead. The team creates the key in Ads Manager and connects it to your AITWIRE account, and AITWIRE records who connected it and when.
  • Or you create the key yourself. In Ads Manager, open Settings and create an API key. Then open Paid AI Ads in AITWIRE, paste the key into the OpenAI Ads card and select Connect. You need to be an owner or admin of your AITWIRE account to do this.

AITWIRE checks the key with one read-only request to OpenAI before saving it. It stores the key encrypted and never shows it again: the card shows only its last four characters.

If the card then asks for your ad account's ID, billing currency and decimals, copy them from Ads Manager. A ceiling cannot be set and no campaign can be approved until they are recorded.

Step 6: Set your monthly ceiling

On Paid AI Ads, set your monthly ad budget ceiling: the most AITWIRE may commit to ad campaigns in a month. AITWIRE refuses to open a campaign that would take the total past it, and you can lower or close it at any time. Only an owner or admin of your business can set or raise it.

Step 7 (optional): Measure your results

  • Add OpenAI's measurement pixel to the pages your ads link to, or send your conversions to OpenAI, so that results can be measured. OpenAI may need to turn this on for your account first.
  • AITWIRE's own tracking snippet records visitors who arrive from AI assistants. The Install Tracking Snippet step of your setup checklist shows how to add it.
  • Once events are coming in, open Conversions in Ads Manager and check its Diagnostics for warnings about the events OpenAI receives.

What happens next

  • Campaigns are proposed on Paid AI Ads: you can propose one yourself, and AITWIRE's team can prepare one for you. Each proposal shows its budget and the condition on which it ends, and you confirm the country it runs in when you approve it.
  • Only an owner or admin of your business can approve a campaign and its budget. AITWIRE's team cannot approve your ad spending. When you approve a campaign, AITWIRE creates it in your ad account and switches it on. If you would rather look at it first, choose to have it created paused: nothing then spends until you switch it on from the campaign card.
  • You can pause or stop a campaign at any time.
  • OpenAI reviews your ads under its own advertising policies and decides whether each ad runs.
